Why This Matters
Why This Matters
If you’ve served your community as a public servant—police officer, firefighter, EMT—you’ve effectively written a blank check with your life, your limbs, and your body. You didn’t hesitate. You showed up, protected lives, and put your future on the line.
In my view, that sacrifice demands more than recognition—it requires responsibility.
The State of Michigan already honors 100% disabled veterans through a property tax exemption. That is right. That is just. But it’s not complete.
Our public servants deserve the same.
They didn’t serve in a war overseas—but they fought battles right here at home. On our streets. In burning buildings. During emergencies. They served us—and many paid a lifelong price for it.
The state—and our local governments—have a fiduciary duty to take care of those who took care of us.
This is not a handout. This is a matter of equity, of integrity, and of fulfilling the promise that service to your community should not lead to poverty, displacement, or neglect.
Now is the time to right this.
Now is the time to lead.
